I wrote about winning a Duncan MacLeod figure at an eBay auction — four days of bidding for the immortal from the series I watched on my own, after my dad had passed. If you missed it, that one’s here.
But there’s another MacLeod. And he’s the ONE that started it all.
The Original
Before Duncan, before the series, there was Connor. Christopher Lambert in a tan trench coat, jeans and white sneakers, a katana hidden under the coat, walking through 1985 New York carrying four hundred years of grief and a Scottish accent he had no business having.
That’s the film I watched with my dad. Makati Cinema Square, across from my school and his office. This is the character we actually sat in the dark and met together for the first time.
It was Destiny
I wasn’t hunting for him. Just like how he did not want to be immortal. That’s how it usually goes not just in the movies but in real life too.
So walking around the city you would find lots of small interesting shops. One of them happened to be just off Flinders Lane. And for the life of me I could not remember the name anymore.
Anyway I walk in just doing my usual toy hunting expeditions when I saw this Connor figure on display. It wasn’t mint in box, but it still came with the box and all its accessories.
I did not think twice. Tapped and went on my way.
The Figure
They nailed the 1985 look. The tan belted trench, the pale blue shirt, the light jeans, and the detail that gets me, the white sneakers with the red flash. The sunglasses hooked over the front of the coat are a lovely touch. And the sword, of course. The katana with the round Japanese-style guard, the blade Ramirez taught him to carry.
Sideshow as always did a good job with this one too. But I think they could have done better with the sculpt.
The Display
I put him in the same Highlands scene as the Duncan figure, well the two of them belong together.
I know they say there could only be one… but now I have both of them and that just completes this part of my memory of my movie day out with my father.
